Walking into your first yoga class can feel exciting—and maybe a little intimidating. One of the most common questions new students ask is, "What should I bring to my first yoga class?"
The good news is that you don't need much to get started. Yoga isn't about having the perfect outfit or expensive equipment. It's about showing up exactly as you are.
If you're preparing for your first class, here's everything you need to know.
1. Comfortable Clothes You Can Move In
The most important thing to bring is comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.
Choose clothes that:
Stretch comfortably
Stay in place as you move
Help you feel confident and comfortable
Leggings, athletic shorts, joggers, tank tops, or T-shirts all work well. There's no need to buy special yoga clothes before your first class.
The best outfit is simply one that lets you focus on your practice instead of adjusting your clothing.
2. A Yoga Mat (If You Have One)
If you already own a yoga mat, bring it along.
If you don't, don't worry! Many yoga studios—including Yoga Hive—offer mats for students to borrow or rent.
Once you decide yoga is something you'd like to continue, purchasing your own mat can make your practice more comfortable and consistent.
3. A Water Bottle
Especially if you're taking an active or heated class, staying hydrated is important.
Bring a reusable water bottle so you can take a drink before or after class whenever you need it.
4. A Small Towel (Optional)
Depending on the style of yoga you're taking, a small towel can be helpful.
For gentle classes, you probably won't need one.
For power yoga, hot yoga, or yoga sculpt, having a towel nearby can make your practice more comfortable.
5. An Open Mind
This might be the most important thing you bring.
Many beginners worry that they aren't flexible enough, strong enough, or experienced enough.
Here's the truth:
You don't need to touch your toes. You don't need fancy yoga clothes. You don't need to know the poses.
You simply need to show up.
Every experienced yogi was once a beginner.
What NOT to Bring
Believe it or not, knowing what to leave at home can be just as helpful.
There's no need to bring:
Shoes (yoga is practiced barefoot)
Socks
Heavy meals right before class
Expectations of being "good" at yoga
Comparisons to anyone else in the room
Yoga isn't about performing. It's about practicing.
Should I Eat Before Yoga?
Yes—but keep it light.
Try eating a small snack about one to two hours before class if you're hungry.
Good options include:
A banana
A handful of nuts
Toast with peanut butter
Yogurt (if you eat dairy)
Fruit
Avoid eating a large meal immediately before class, as twisting and forward folds can feel uncomfortable on a full stomach.
When Should I Arrive?
Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early for your first class.
This gives you time to:
Meet your instructor
Ask questions
Complete any paperwork
Get settled without feeling rushed
Let your teacher know about any injuries or concerns
Starting your practice feeling calm makes a big difference.
What Happens During Your First Yoga Class?
Every studio is a little different, but most beginner-friendly classes include:
A warm welcome
Gentle breathing exercises
Simple yoga poses
Options and modifications throughout class
Relaxation at the end (called Savasana)
Remember, it's perfectly okay to take breaks whenever you need them.
Your yoga practice is about listening to your body—not keeping up with anyone else.
